Rio Ferdinand admitted he wishes he could say he played alongside both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo and confessed to being jealous of his former Manchester United team-mate Gerard Pique who has done exactly that.

The former United and England centre-back spent many years playing alongside Ronaldo at Old Trafford but has never lined up with Messi – although he has shared the same pitch with the diminuitive Argentine.

Pique, who left Old Trafford to return to boyhood club Barcelona in 2008, played with Messi at the Camp Nou and has impressively won the Champions League alongside both of the GOAT contenders.

And Ferdinand hailed his former centre-back partner as a ‘lucky man’ for being able to spend the entirety of his professional career playing alongside Ronaldo and Messi.

‘I’ve played with Ronaldo, I haven’t played with Messi,’ Ferdinand told the Mirror.

‘I’d have loved to play with him as well. Being able to play with two of the best players ever, would’ve been a great thing to be able to say that.

‘Pique has done that, he’s lucky man.

‘Would’ve loved to say I’d played with both.’

Pique isn’t the only man to play alongside the pair at club level, Henrik Larsson also featured alongside them both thanks to his loan spell at Old Trafford in 2007.

Several stars have played alongside one at club level and the other at international level including former United stars Gabriel Heinze, Carlos Tevez and Angel di Maria and Chelsea striker Gonzalo Higuain.
